Korea's Finance Nominee Lee Hyung-il Puts Inflation First, Housing for Residents

Lee Hyung-il, the nominee for deputy prime minister and minister of finance and economy, laid out his policy priorities on September 2, calling inflation “the biggest mission” facing his ministry and endorsing the government’s push to anchor the housing market around people who actually live in their homes rather than investors. His remarks in Sejong offer the first detailed look at how he intends to run South Korea’s lead economic ministry if confirmed.
Prices Come Before Everything Else
Lee was most specific on inflation. Beyond calling it his central task, he said the government would work toward an additional round of Chuseok price measures, pointing to options such as expanding the supply of holiday staples and deepening discount programs ahead of the autumn harvest festival. The Ministry of Finance and Economy has already announced a Chuseok livelihood stability package, so any follow-up would build on measures now in place rather than start from scratch.
The emphasis is notable because it commits the nominee to visible, near-term results. Holiday food prices are among the most politically sensitive gauges of inflation in Korea, and a second package within weeks of the first would indicate the administration sees the existing steps as insufficient on their own.
A Housing Market Built Around Living, Not Trading
On real estate, Lee aligned himself squarely with the administration’s stated direction. A “residence-centered housing market,” he said, is the government’s settled course — language that implies continued pressure on speculative demand. He tempered that stance with a caveat: where market participants raise “reasonable demands,” the government would reflect them. That formulation leaves room for adjustment at the margins without signaling any retreat from the broader framework.
The balance he struck — firm on direction, flexible on detail — suggests the housing portfolio under his leadership would prioritize predictability over sweeping new intervention, at least at the outset.
Claiming the Deputy Prime Minister’s Chair in Practice, Not Just Title
Perhaps the most consequential remarks concerned how economic policy gets made. Lee said the economic deputy prime minister must exercise real leadership, and he proposed creating a new standing meeting on current economic issues that would bring economic ministers together with the presidential office for regular coordination on core matters.
That is a statement about institutional weight. The ministry Lee has been tapped to lead is itself new: the Lee Jae Myung government broke up the former Ministry of Economy and Finance in early 2026, ending an arrangement that had stood since a 2008 consolidation and producing two successor bodies, with budget authority housed separately. Koo Yun-cheol has led the finance and economy side since the start of January 2026. In a structure where the purse strings sit elsewhere, a deputy prime minister’s influence depends heavily on convening power — precisely what Lee’s proposed forum would formalize.
The Confirmation Test Ahead
Lee’s agenda now moves to the confirmation process, where lawmakers will press him on how additional Chuseok measures would be funded and how far “reasonable demands” on housing policy might stretch. His ministry is simultaneously preparing the 2027 budget proposal, meaning his answers on fiscal priorities will carry weight beyond the hearing room. Whether he can convert the deputy prime minister’s title into the coordinating role he described will be the clearest early measure of his tenure — and the one the rest of the cabinet will be watching.
