KOSPI Jumps 3.56% in Chip-Led Rally, Extending Its Winning Streak to Four Days

South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI closed 3.56% higher on Wednesday, August 13, notching its fourth consecutive daily gain in a rally driven by semiconductor shares. The tech-heavy KOSDAQ also finished in positive territory, but its 0.29% advance was far more subdued — a gap that points to how concentrated the buying has become in the large-cap chip names that dominate the main board.
A Rally That Peaked Before the Bell
The session was stronger at its midpoint than at its close. In morning trade the KOSPI was holding gains in the 4% range while the KOSDAQ was up more than 1%. By the final bell, those advances had narrowed to 3.56% and 0.29% respectively. The KOSPI retained the bulk of its intraday move; the KOSDAQ gave back most of its morning strength, ending only marginally higher.
That intraday pattern matters for reading the rally’s character. A close well off the highs on the smaller-cap index, alongside a large-cap benchmark that held firm, is consistent with buying focused on the heavyweight semiconductor complex rather than a broad-based advance across the market.
Four Sessions of Gains, One Dominant Theme
The August 13 close extends a streak in which the KOSPI and KOSDAQ have risen in tandem for four straight sessions. Semiconductor strength was the identified driver of Wednesday’s move, continuing the sector’s role as the market’s engine. A single-day gain of 3.56% is a substantial move for the KOSPI by any standard, and stacking it on top of three prior up days marks one of the index’s more forceful short-term runs of the year.
The Question the KOSDAQ Raises
The 3.27-percentage-point spread between the two indices on the same trading day is the number worth sitting with. When a rally is carried this heavily by one sector’s large caps, its durability depends on whether participation eventually broadens — or whether the smaller-cap market’s fade into the close proves the more telling indicator. Wednesday’s session offered evidence for both readings: a winning streak intact across both boards, but conviction that thinned noticeably outside the chip complex by day’s end.
