Samsung Debuts Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8 in AI Foldable Push
Samsung Electronics (005930) has introduced a refreshed generation of foldable phones — the Galaxy Z Fold8, a newly created top-tier Fold8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip8 — positioning the trio as the centerpiece of its push into AI-driven mobile hardware. The most immediately visible change is a reworked screen aspect ratio on the Fold8 that alters how the device feels in the hand from the first grip, while the debut of an “Ultra” foldable signals Samsung’s intent to stretch the category upmarket.
A Wider Lineup, Starting With the Fold
The headline shift this cycle is structural rather than incremental. The Galaxy Z Fold8 adopts a changed aspect ratio, giving the folded and unfolded forms a different proportion than earlier Fold models — a design choice buyers notice before they ever open an app. Alongside it, Samsung has added the Fold8 Ultra, its first foldable to carry the “Ultra” designation that until now was reserved for the flagship Galaxy S slab phones. The clamshell Galaxy Z Flip8 rounds out the release, keeping the compact folding form factor in the range.
Betting the Foldable on AI
Samsung is framing this generation less as a spec bump and more as the opening of an AI foldable phase for the product line. Folding hardware gives the company more screen area to work with, and pairing that canvas with on-device intelligence is the strategic thread tying the Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8 together. It is a natural extension for a company whose scale in the sector is hard to overstate: by 2017 revenue, Samsung Electronics had become the world’s largest information technology firm and had passed Intel as the top chipmaker, and as of 2024 the Samsung brand ranked fifth worldwide in brand value.
Carriers Move to Put Devices in Buyers’ Hands
Distribution is ramping up in parallel. KT (030200) — the South Korean telecom carrier formerly known as Korea Telecom — is opening hands-on experience areas for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Flip8 across its flagship stores and regional outlets nationwide, timing the rollout to the phones’ launch. For foldables, where the appeal rests on a physical mechanism, letting customers fold and unfold a unit before buying is a meaningful part of the sales pitch, and a nationwide footprint gives Samsung’s new models broad in-person exposure at launch.
The Backdrop
The launch lands against the weight of one of South Korea’s defining industrial names. Samsung traces its roots to 1938, when Lee Byung-chul founded it as a trading firm, and it now stands as the country’s largest chaebol, the family-controlled conglomerate structure that anchors much of the Korean economy, with its headquarters in the Samsung Town complex in Seoul. Whether the new aspect ratio and the Ultra-tier addition broaden the foldable audience will become clearer as the devices reach shelves, but the direction of travel — bigger, more premium, and built around AI — is now set.
