Stemco Commits 150 Billion Won to Expand Its Ochang Plant in Cheongju

Stemco, a foreign-invested company that manufactures inductor coils, will spend 150 billion won to expand its factory in the Ochang Science Industrial Complex, under an investment agreement signed with North Chungcheong Province and the city of Cheongju on August 6.

A 150 Billion Won Commitment Sealed at the Provincial Hall

The agreement was formalized at the North Chungcheong provincial government complex, located in Cheongju’s Sangdang district, with the province, the city, and Stemco as the three signatories. The pact centers on enlarging the company’s existing production footprint inside the Ochang Science Industrial Complex, one of the region’s flagship manufacturing zones on the northern edge of Cheongju.

For a component maker, an expansion rather than a greenfield build is the faster route to added capacity: land, utilities, and an existing workforce are already in place, and the industrial complex’s infrastructure spares the company the years of permitting that a new site would demand.

Why the Province Courts Component Manufacturers

North Chungcheong Province administers eleven lower-level governments — the cities of Cheongju, Chungju, and Jecheon along with eight counties — and Cheongju, as the provincial seat, anchors its industrial base. Retaining a foreign-invested manufacturer’s next round of capital inside the province, rather than losing it to a competing region or an overseas site, is precisely the kind of outcome local investment agreements are designed to lock in.

Inductor coils are passive components used across power management in electronics, from consumer devices to automotive systems. A nine-figure-dollar-scale commitment to added capacity points to sustained order visibility in that segment, though the company has not publicly tied the expansion to specific customers or end markets.

Open Questions on Jobs and Timing

The headline investment figure is firm; the operational details are not yet. Neither the construction schedule, the expected hiring, nor the target production start has been disclosed. Those figures will determine how much of the 150 billion won translates into local economic effect for Cheongju — the metric by which the city and province will ultimately judge the deal they signed.
